Look here to get an inexpensive one: http://www.startssl.com/

I don’t make any money from them. They are just useful and inexpensive.

I’m going to show my ignorance. What do they do and what are their benefits?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates for web applications encrypt the information transmitted between the user’s browser and the web site.

Right now, everyone that logs into this website (or the SMC website for that matter) sends their username and password, along with every single thing they type, over the Internet in plain text, for anyone in between the web site and the user to read.

By getting a SSL cert for the forum, all the usernames, the password, and the content would be encrypted when it travels the Internet.
